As many readers may know, the five individual category scores are combined into a single overall score for each country which tends to reduce the instances of large or sudden movements but a one or two-point change in the overall score represents a considerable degree of change. In this edition, Algeria, Colombia, Ecuador and South Africa each came close to having all five individual risk categories rising.
Several countries saw falling scores in this edition; Gabon which has been helped by the improving health of its president lowering the risk of political violence, while Egypt and Ukraine have benefited from a stronger economic outlook.
